Raspberry Jam Muffins

Raspberry Jam Muffins

This year I went a little bit overboard with the berry picking! It was awesome fun though to get out in the sun and pick so many berries knowing that come winter we’d have a whole bunch of options for fruit. I made a ton of jam (seriously, anyone wants to come by and get some jam I’ll have enough for a couple years) I made some blueberry pie filling, and froze a good number of the blueberries (sealed with my vacuum sealer). It's so nice to have all these berries from the height of their season … [Read more...]

I Tried it For You! Lifestraw GO! A Review and GIVEAWAY!

How many of you have tried the infamous Lifestraw? It's one of my favorite survival gadgets! Not only because I believe water is so important, but also because I love the simplicity and ease of use. And at $20 a pop ($14.99 on sale every now and then!) They're hard to pass up! The only thing I DIDN'T like about the Lifestraw was that you couldn't bring the water with you unless you had a separate container. Puddles aren't exactly portable no matter how important they may be. If you're on the … [Read more...]

National Preparedness Month: Water Storage & Purification

National Preparedness Month In case you didn't catch it, September is National Preparedness Month! This is a month designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the Department of Homeland Security that encourages Americans to prepare for natural disasters. September 2011 was when I first started hearing about and learning about "preppers." It intrigued me! And a few short months later when I found out about our new little one on the way, I got started on this crazy … [Read more...]

Fresh Water Giveaway: Win a Big Berkey!

Have you heard that the month of September is National Emergency Preparedness Month? (Yes, I know...the broken record again...) I was really concerned when I read that the city of Toledo, Ohio was not able to use their culinary water for quite some time. They could not even boil it to make it safe because of the toxic nature of the water. This is one more reason we need to tell the world about National Emergency Preparedness Month. Wow, this makes me wish every family in the world could have … [Read more...]

How I Preserve Food: Freezer Jam

How I Preserve Food: Freezer Jam

Over the past couple of years, I have investigated and experimented with several different types of food storage. Pressure canning, Water bath canning, Dehydrating, Vacuum sealing... I've probably done it all :) One of my favorite methods; however, is using the freezer! Freezer jam is quick and easy, plus it doesn't require you to heat up your entire house in the middle of summer to make delicious jam! My favorite jam to make is strawberry, and that's what I'm making today, but you can … [Read more...]

Chicken Pot Pie is one of my all-time favorite Southern Comfort Foods. I just love it! Imagine my surprise when I found a recipe for a quick and easy one in my copy of The Prepper's Cookbook! (I highly recommend you get yourself a copy by the way!) I've never thought of Chicken Pot Pie being something EASY to make. It's usually one of those things that you have every once in awhile as a treat because it takes ALL DAY to put together! Boiling, skinning, and shredding a chicken, peeling and … [Read more...]

I Tried it for You! Thrive Express Freeze-Dried Meals Review

Last week I posted about our freeze-dried emergency meal taste testing of Mountain House pouches and how much our family loved them! This week, I'm continuing the discussion, with a new brand! We also tried out Thrive Express Freeze-Dried pouches, and are impressed with them as well! We're 2/2 in this house! :) We tried Chile Lime Chicken Rice, Creamy Beef & Noodles, and Loaded Scalloped Potatoes. How to Prepare the Meals Similar to the mountain house packages, we opened each package and … [Read more...]

I Tried it for You! Mountain House Freeze Dried Pouches Review

This past weekend my husband and I had a taste testing of sorts going on at our home. While I have been slowly building up my food storage pantry over the past couple of years with canned goods, bulk dried goods, and the like, we decided that we would also like to have some freeze-dried rations on hand as well. There are a LOT of food storage companies out there, all claiming to have the BEST at something: longest shelf-life, better tasting, most nutritious, most appealing packaging, etc. For … [Read more...]

5 Reasons Why I LOVE my Berkey

Water Storage My husband and I recently made the decision to purchase a water filter for our home. We have been working on organizing and building up our preparations, and the first thing we decided we needed to fortify was our water supply. We have stored water in bottles, barrels, and jugs, but we know that in a true emergency situation, eventually that will run out, and we'll resort to finding water for our family: Rain collection, lakes, ponds, and streams are all great sources, and we have … [Read more...]
